Exploring the Universe of Thought –
SGIA’s 5th TOK Exhibition

On August 28–29, 2025, SGIA’s Grade 12 International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) students and Theory of Knowledge (TOK) teachers of Batch 2026 proudly hosted SGIA’s 5th TOK Exhibition.

Theory of Knowledge is a core component of the IBDP that challenges students to think critically and broaden their perspectives on the world while engaging with philosophical

questions. The TOK Exhibition serves as a platform for students to showcase what they have learned throughout their TOK journey and to share their valuable insights with the wider community.

This year’s theme, “Beyond What We Know – Exploring the Universe of Thought”, was vividly brought to life as the Multipurpose Hall was transformed into a universe of lights.

The glowing atmosphere highlighted the students’ booths, each presenting three carefully chosen objects that reflected their exploration of knowledge.

Day 1: A Journey Begins

Day 1 of the exhibition welcomed Grade 11 IBDP students—eager, curious, and just beginning their own TOK journeys. The program opened with a short video, in which representatives of Grade 12 students reflected on their experiences preparing for the exhibition.

Afterward, SGIA’s Secondary Principal, Mr. Roger Mar B. Calamayan, delivered an inspiring welcome address, followed by a keynote speech from Sarah Angel Matthew, a Nanyang Technological University graduate and cherished SGIA alumna, who shared how TOK has influenced her life beyond the IBDP. To conclude the opening, Mr. Vijay Gupta, Secondary Vice-Principal, expressed his enthusiasm for the exhibition in a motivating message that set the tone for the event.

Day 2: Inspiring the Next Generation

Day 2 provided Grade 10 students an early glimpse into the world of TOK, helping them make informed decisions about joining the IBDP. The exhibition also welcomed Grade 5 PYP students, offering them inspiration for their own upcoming PYP Exhibition.

The day began with another warm message from Mr. Vijay Gupta, followed by a speech from alumna Sanskriti Thakur, from Batch 2023 and is currently studying at the University of Warwick, who shared how the skills and perspectives gained in TOK continued to shape her journey through IB and university.

Before the second session on Day 2, Sparsh Singhal, a distinguished alumnus from SGIA’s very first IBDP cohort and the first student to achieve a perfect IB score of 45, shared his TOK journey and professional experiences. He was accompanied by SGIA’s COO, Ibu Indah Salazar, who also graciously visited the exhibition booths.

Both days concluded with audience reflections from Grade 5, Grade 10 Cambridge, and Grade 11 IBDP students, who shared valuable insights gained from the exhibition.

Beyond What We Know

The TOK Exhibition allows students to connect thought-provoking TOK prompts with unique objects, exploring themes such as Technology, Religion, Indigenous Societies, Politics, Language, and the Core Theme: Knowledge and the Knower. Each object serves as a window into new ways of thinking, encouraging the audience to reflect on their own pursuit of knowledge.

Our students prepared months in advance, engaging in deep study and writing thoughtful commentaries to bring

the exhibition to life. This process nurtured their ability to question, to seek evidence, and to explore the “universe of thought” with curiosity and rigor.

The exhibition also embodies the IB learner profile, inspiring students to be inquirers, thinkers, and communicators. TOK has planted seeds of curiosity in our learners, and this exhibition provided a vessel for that curiosity to spread within the SGIA community and beyond.

A Legacy for the Future

IBDP Batch 2026 extends its gratitude to their TOK teachers and mentors – Ms. Joy and Mr. Davis, as well as to the school leaders, and staff whose guidance and support made the event possible. The success of TOK Exhibition 2025 sets a meaningful precedent for future cohorts. As the IBDP Batch of 2027 takes on the challenge next year, they too will continue the journey of exploring what it means to know.
