Explore Possibility: Materials Properties
A Trip to Secondary Science Lab with Mr. Jurio
Unit of Inquiry 4
How The World Works
Grade 2
The field of Materials in the environment which encompasses the science, engineering and technology of materials, is an interdisciplinary area involving the structure and properties of materials with application to the design, development and manufacture of real products.
These are some of the types of materials most commonly used. Knowledge of materials allows for comparison of everyday materials, e.g. different kinds of wood, rock, metal, paper, plastic, on the basis of their properties, including hardness, strength, flexibility and magnetic behavior, and to relate these properties to everyday uses of the materials.
Grade 2 Students explored three experiments. First, object-optic, in this experiment students used different lenses (concave and convex) and here the students needed to find the focus for each lense. Second, was the strength test for different materials (cardboard, infra board, styrofoam, and metal) using mass. Third was the conductor test, the students were provided a simple electricity circuit (bulb, battery and wire) and the circuit was connected with the materials; whereas they need to find out if the current can pass through it or not. Overall, it was a fun filled Science investigations about the properties of materials with the help and expertise of Mr. Jurio.
