SGIA’s Successful Outcome from the 21st HMCA Conference

Earlier this year, SGIA proudly participated in the 21st Harvard Model Congress Asia (HMCA) conference, a government simulation debate organized by Harvard University students. The event brought together 320 students from around the world to represent both the U.S. government and various international countries. Delegates debated global issues, negotiated resolutions, and developed skills in diplomacy, international relations, and public speaking. From January 8 to 10, 2025, twelve SGIA students took part in the conference, which was held at National Taiwan University in Taipei, Taiwan. They served as delegates in 10 different committees, including the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), House Energy & Commerce, House Foreign Affairs, House Homeland Security, House Science, Space, & Technology, and Senate Health, Education, Labor, & Pensions.

Our delegates engaged in debates and crafted resolutions on a range of significant global issues, including, but not limited to, the South China Sea conflict, the Belt and Road Initiative, Youth immunization in Africa, the future of nuclear energy, the Human rights crisis in Afghanistan, rising political extremism, regulation of electric vehicle infrastructure, and artificial intelligence and labor protections. The delegates dedicated weeks of rigorous research and preparation, enabling them to participate in meaningful discussions and contribute to the creation of impactful bill resolutions. Their efforts were truly rewarding!

At the conclusion of the three-day debate, SGIA student Andreas Aglen Alsos received the Honourable Mention award in the House Energy & Commerce committee. He stood out among his peers, confidently advocating for his positions on cybersecurity in the healthcare industry and the future of nuclear energy. Representing Congresswoman Diana DeGette from Colorado’s 1st district, Andreas delivered compelling speeches and contributed to the drafting of effective resolutions to address these critical issues.

Another SGIA student, Fayla Khayrissa Rahmadita, emerged victorious in the speech contest held during the conference. She had the opportunity to deliver her inspiring and heartfelt speech to hundreds of students, faculty, and staff on the final day of HMCA 2025. Her message about pursuing one's dreams deeply resonated with the audience, earning her enthusiastic applause and cheers from everyone in the auditorium.

Additionally, four of our students—Ghaisan Hafuza Kasabi (Grade 12), Nicholas Jordan Limanto (Grade 12), Fayla Khayrissa Rahmadita (Grade 12), and Claire Schieffer Chang (Grade 11)—were awarded partial scholarships by HMCA. They were honored at the Scholarship Reception lunch, where they celebrated their achievements.

The HMCA 2025 conference proved to be an enriching and invaluable experience for SGIA’s delegates, further enhancing their public speaking abilities and deepening their passion for addressing global challenges. The time spent in Taiwan, alongside their supervising teacher, ended on a high note, filled with unforgettable moments of excitement and camaraderie.

After the completion of HMCA 2025, our delegates would like to share their thoughts and feelings regarding their exceptional experience:

Unique to each detail of any conference that I’ve ever been to.Felix

This year’s HMCA was an inspiring and enriching experience, showcasing the talent and passion of each delegate. The engaging sessions and opportunities for networking left a lasting impression on me.

My committee in HMCA 2025 was very welcoming and collaborative; I felt comfortable and fit in instantly, although everyone was very competitive. My chairs were extremely kind, encouraging, and supportive, now I gained more confidence and so much more knowledge..Whitnie

HMCA 2025 has been such a wonderful and fun experience, filled with utmost warmth and excitement, and joining HMCA has really made me more confident in speaking and standing up to my beliefs while fostering my knowledge and curiosity about global issues. So, this experience is really precious to me as a person and I will cherish it greatly..Ryan

HMCA felt like a once in a lifetime experience to me, as I heard from my fellow delegates not every conference is the same, even if it’s the same programme. You will meet new people, in a new environment, at a different time. Joining this year's HMCA was truly the greatest opportunity as a young learner. Meeting people with different backgrounds and building relationships with endless possibilities is something that I will cherish forever. Claire

I had a really great experience at this year's HMCA. I made a lot of new friends and connections, I collaborated with other people, I gained new knowledge and I had a fun time during the committee sessions. Sometimes it would be pressuring but it was an overall worth it experience. Aisyah

Attending HMCA for the second time was an exhilarating experience, as I met supportive and encouraging delegates regardless of the country I represented. Standing as China’s delegate in UNESCAP challenged me to deepen my understanding of politics, economics, and the art of diplomacy. -  Sidney

HMCA was a fun and educational experience where I needed to step out of my comfort zone to be able to do my best. I also met a lot of interesting people that challenged me as well. Andreas

The perfect way to end my high school chapter. Fayla
