SGIA’s Feats during the 22nd Harvard Model Congress Asia
This year marks the 22nd Harvard Model Congress Asia (HMCA) taking place in the capital of Japan, Tokyo, specifically in Hitotsubashi Hall and Japan Education Center. The conference lasted 3 days, from January 6 until Jan 8, 2026. This conference highlights the life of government officials and UN representatives in action and is the first conference to feature coalitions with 3 committees working together to address a typhoon crisis.

More than 200 delegates from 18 schools have attended the conference, each coming from different countries, schools, and each having a unique backstory. People from different countries including Japan, Kazakhstan, Philippines and Indonesia have to work together to form solutions and address global issues that the world is currently facing.
This year, SGIA brought 16 delegates with ages ranging from 13 all the way to 17 years old. They participated in 10 different committees including: Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), United Nations Human Right Council (UNHRC), United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 30), Group of Twenty (G20), House Select Committee on Intelligence, Senate Foreign Relations, Senate Committee on Health, Labor, and Pensions (Senate HELP), and House Foreign Affairs.

Everyone had done their part with the highest of quality, each doing their best ensuring SGIA remains victorious, and the results do not disappoint. The main topics of debate varies between committees such as: Cybersecurity between Digital Governance in Southeast Asia, Solar Geoengineering, Mass Tourism, Protecting Ukrainian Refugees, Universal Early Childhood Education in Asia, The Maternal Mortality Rate, Disputes in the South China Sea, Reforming Classified Information Handling, US Foreign Aid and Humanitarian Assistance, US-Iran Relations, Federal Student Loans and Workforce Development.
At the end of the 3-day conference, SGIA came home with 2 awards:
SGIA Grade 12 student, Aisyah Katherine Morris was awarded Best Speech in the Speech Writing Contest. Her speech reflects on her journey from self-doubt and feeling silenced due to appearance-based discrimination to finding confidence and acceptance at the Harvard Model Congress Asia. Through this experience, she emphasizes that HMCA is a safe space where individuality is respected and everyone’s voice is valued. She didn’t just give a speech, she revealed that even with our imperfections, we are enough, with her quote: “You are enough, just the way you are”. She delivered this inspiring speech in front of an audience of more than 200 people with confidence.

Not only that, but another one of our delegates, Yin Xiaotao, achieved the Presidential Cabinet Award for her strong resolution, which displays her strong analytical thinking and policy insight. Her solutions displayed creativity and were well-researched for a global setting. Her bill was one of two chosen out of the 78 bills that were passed during the conference. (An exceptional achievement indeed)

This year’s conference was truly exceptional, and despite most of the SGIA team being first-time participants, the experiences everyone shared were unforgettable. HMCA 2026 showed the complexity of global issues and a deeper understanding of politics. This was truly a unique experience for all SGIA delegates. Despite the challenges along the journey, the joy and laughter made every moment worthwhile. We hope our delegates and supervisors will carry these memories with them and perhaps return in the years to come to guide and inspire future delegates. This was truly an unforgettable experience.
