Grade 5 Field Trip:
Exploring How the World Works
Learning Beyond the Classroom Through Science, Innovation and Sustainability
Learning came to life as our Grade 5 PYP students embarked on an exciting educational field trip to Singapore, exploring the transdisciplinary theme How the World Works.
Guided by the central idea, “Energy comes in different forms and can be changed in different ways to support human life,” students visited three fascinating destinations: Science Centre Singapore, Marina Barrage and Temasek Shophouse. Each stop offered valuable opportunities to connect classroom learning with real-world applications of science, technology and sustainability.
Discovering Science at Science Centre Singapore
The adventure began at Science Centre Singapore, where students explored scientific concepts through interactive exhibits and hands-on experiences. They investigated how things work, observed scientific phenomena and discovered how science influences everyday life. The experience encouraged curiosity, questioning and critical thinking as students explored the practical applications of scientific knowledge.
Exploring Sustainability at Marina Barrage
At Marina Barrage, students discovered how engineering and technology support Singapore's water management system. They learned about rainwater collection, water conservation and flood control, gaining a deeper understanding of the importance of managing natural resources responsibly. Students also explored the role of solar energy and how sunlight can be transformed into electricity, connecting energy transformations with sustainable development.
Understanding Sustainable Living at Temasek Shophouse
The journey continued at Temasek Shophouse, where students explored sustainability from the perspective of people, communities and the environment. They reflected on responsible consumption, environmental awareness and how buildings and businesses can adopt more sustainable practices. The visit encouraged students to consider how everyday choices can contribute to a healthier planet.
Learning That Makes a Difference
Beyond discovering new places, this field trip provided meaningful opportunities for students to ask questions, make connections and think critically about the world around them. They gained a deeper appreciation of how scientific discoveries, technological innovations and responsible decisions can improve lives and support a sustainable future.
More importantly, students were reminded that everyone has a role to play in protecting our environment and using resources wisely.
Explore • Discover • Connect • Create a Better Future!
Because the world is our classroom, and every experience is an opportunity to learn.
