Grade 3 Field Trip :
Exploring Resource Sharing and Conservation

Grade 3 students recently participated in an enriching field trip to Gardens by the Bay and Kok Fah Farm, bringing their Unit of Inquiry, Sharing the Planet, to life. This unit focuses on the central idea that living things share available resources to survive. The trip gave students invaluable firsthand experiences in understanding the importance of resource sharing, adaptation, and conservation for all living organisms.

At Gardens by the Bay, students explored the iconic Flower Dome and Cloud Forest, two conservatories showcasing plants from diverse ecosystems. Through the

A Garden of Wonder program, they observed how plants adapt to their environments by sharing resources like water, sunlight, and nutrients. For example, desert cacti store water to thrive in arid climates, while tropical plants absorb moisture from humid air. Students discovered how plants and animals interact within these ecosystems, forming networks of shared resources crucial for survival. They also reflected on the effects of human activities on these delicate ecosystems, discussing the need for conservation to protect biodiversity and ensure balance in nature.

At Kok Fah Farm, students learned how modern agriculture optimizes the sharing and conservation of resources. They explored innovative techniques like hydroponics, which maximize water and nutrient efficiency while conserving space and reducing waste. The farm demonstrated how renewable resources, such as plants, can be cultivated sustainably to provide essential needs like food and oxygen. Students observed how collaboration, innovation, and responsible resource management enable farmers to support productivity while protecting the environment.

This immersive experience helped students grasp key concepts of resource interdependence, adaptation for survival, and sustainable practices. By connecting classroom learning with real-world applications, they gained a deeper appreciation for the delicate balance of biodiversity and the critical role of conservation. Inspired by what they saw, students reflected on their responsibility to conserve resources and protect our planet for future generations. This field trip not only enhanced their understanding of ecosystems and agriculture but also encouraged them to think critically about their role in fostering a healthier, more sustainable world.
