THROUGH THE YEARS

Story is the Window of the World

This year’s Literacy Week activities have been quite entertaining and interesting to our students; it took place last 25 February to 1 March 2019. Several new activities were prepared:

  • Storytelling 

  • Poetry reading 

  • Book making

  • Book Expo

Everybody had the chance to be a part of it. Lower elementary classes shared their work with the ECC classes. Higher elementary classes read their own poetry composition to the lower elementary classes.

​

Parents read poetry to grade 4 classes as well as Ms. Peggy, Ms. Nicole and Mr. Chris did storytelling to Pre-K and grade 2 classes respectively.

Thank you so much for the impressive poems “Counting the Stars at Night'' (별헤는 밤) read by Oh Eunha Kim DoKyeong (4B) and Kim Doyoung’s (5A)  mother, and “Those Who Try”  read by  Snehashish Chatterjee and Sushmita Chakravarty parents of Shaurya (4B) and Abhay (1A).

Teachers are also involved in storytelling sessions with students, thank you to Mr. Chris, Ms. Peggy, and Ms. Nicole who brought us into the adventure.

The students also had the chance to listen to the very creative storytelling of Kak Ariyo from Jakarta about “E,” and gave us tips on how to do storytelling confidently.

The culmination day on Friday, 1 March 2019 served as a reflection of what we have done the past week. As an opening act, ECC students’ parade wearing book characters recalling our radiant memory.

More surprises were given as we did the acknowledgements to primary students who borrowed books the most from the library and for ECC students who read the books most enthusiastically. Gramedia vouchers were presented for these bookworms accompanied by a certificate of appreciation.

Atria and Ziva who became our Masters of Ceremony concluded the culmination event with a video screening where most of the students sang along with the theme song, “Something Just like This” by Coldplay. Put On Your Reading Hats

This year’s Literacy Week activities are also fascinating and inspiring to our students; it took place from 2 to 6 March 2020. We had:

  • Storytelling 

  • Book cover contest & drawing competition

  • Writing contest

  • Writing workshop for students

  • Book signing by Jamie Yorke

  • Book Expo

Everybody had the chance to participate in our literacy week. Grade 2 classes told their own made book to K3 classes. Grade 3 and Grade 4 classes read Dr. Seuss books and made bookshelf markers in groups. Grade 5 classes read the biography of Dr Seuss.

Thank you for our parents volunteers who shared their story with the students: Ms. Alviga Andelisa, Ms. Lisa Ann Adcock, Ms. Septi Sueni, Ms. Cassandra Voss. Teachers are also involved in storytelling sessions with students, thank you to Mr. Chris, Ms. Delima, Ms. Nicole, Ms. Olga, who brought us into the new adventure through reading.

The students also had the chance to have their pre-order “Power Five” the series from the book author, Mr. Jamie Yorke and have him sign the book. Mr. Jamie Yorke also gave a writing workshop on how to write your own book.

The culmination day on Friday, 6 March 2020 served as a reflection of what we have done the past week. As an opening act, ECC students’ parade wearing their creative hats and having Mr. Scott to do the storytelling for us.

Trophies and Gramedia vouchers were presented for these bookworms accompanied by a certificate of appreciation. The winners of the book cover contest, drawing and competition were announced and they had trophies and gifts to bring home.

Nicholas and Maileen became our Masters of Ceremony and delivered the whole event  smoothly. And we closed the event by giving books donations to 3 organizations : Sekolah YAPENDIK GPIB Citra Bahtera Hayat, Komunitas Mahasiswa Papua, and Lingkar Pendidik Indonesia.

World Storytelling Day

This year COVID-19 pandemic would not stop us from celebrating Literacy Week; it took place from 15, 16, 17 March 2021. This year we have students, parents, teachers, and 2 resource speakers who would expose us into adventure from the corner of the world.

​

Thank you for Aaliyah Michelle Kusumawardhani and Sanskriti Mehta who told “A Box of Butterflies“ to Grade 1 and Grade 2 classes. Also to Angelina Tanuwijaya and Anna Tian Xiu Qi who read the spooky story “Ursula’s Funland #4: The Hall of Mirrors” to Grade 3 and 4 classes.

We had also had fun with our parents volunteers who shared their story: Mr. Frederic Polliart, Ms. Cassandra Voss, Ms Christina Kustyawijaya; Ms. Avianty Wulandari, Mr. Andrew Patterson, Mr. Robin Klymow, and Ms. Alviga Andelisa. And thank you for our amazing teachers and employee volunteer who brought us to travel far by telling stories: Ms. Mida, Mr. Chris, Mr. Andre, Ms. Brigitta, Ms Delima, Ms. Friska, Ms. Mery, Ms. Monique, Ms. Nicole, Ms. Olga, Ms. Peggy, Mr. Scott, and Ms, Yana.

The culmination day on Wednesday, 17 March 2021 and students are encouraged to use something to represent their tribe, culture, or nation.

On the same day, we are honored to have Prof Mel Rosenberg sharing his Ourboox, a platform to make children’s ebooks and read his one book in Bahasa Indonesia, “Raja yang Tidak Begitu Tinggi” to students in Grade 3, 4, and 5 classes.

We are pleased to have Mr. Dhondup Gyaltsen shared an inspiring book “The Seed of Compassion” and shared about Tibetan culture with our students in Grade 1 and 2.

​

We are grateful for everyone’s participation in this year Literacy Week. Reading brings us across the border, going further, and seeing opportunity to thrive even on the Covid-19 pandemic.
