Diving into How We See Things:
Remembering Our TOK Exhibition
On August 29, 2024, the IBDP grade 12 students hosted their TOK Exhibition. Students were impressed with their ability to tackle tough philosophical ideas, a window into an amazing event. The themes this year were: "Reality Check: How Our Minds Deceive Us" and "Ephemeral Epiphany".
The event started off with a welcome address from our principal, Dr. Vijay Gupta, followed by a welcome video from our guest speaker, Mr. Daniel Trump, founder of “TOK Today” through which he gave our students an insightful welcoming message. Afterwards, Mr. Chris Dumo shared an inspiring anecdote to the audience and the event officially began.
Theory of Knowledge(TOK), a mandatory core component of the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum, challenges the students to question and analyze the nature of knowledge itself. Through this exhibition, students demonstrated their ability to connect abstract concepts with real-world contexts, showcasing their understanding of how knowledge is constructed, validated, and utilized in various fields.
For this TOK exhibition, After months of inquiry and critical thinking, the objects each student chose were diverse and some were novel; but what they had in common was the approach to their area of knowledge. From Gel Electrophoresis DNA apparatus and Albert Einstein Gravitation equations to works of literature or history — every exhibit was questioning our faith in perception, at best giving us a moment of insight that slipped through our fingers as quickly as it came. Each exhibit is a culmination of extensive research, critical thinking, and creative expression, embodying the essence of the TOK course.
Many students from primary and secondary school had the opportunity to visit the presenters at the event. They were captivated by the presentations and asked many excellent questions to the presenters.
The Exhibition showed off our students’ intellectual curiosity and got us all talking about what it means to know, see, and determine truth. We are so proud as a school of the work our students have put in to tackle such tough content and present it in such a creative way. Our students were able to show their ability to inquire as well as be knowledgeable which are part of the IB Learners Profile.
The TOK Exhibition 2024 was a great reminder that our view of the world is more complex than we think and our students were able to get into the intricacies of knowledge by showing us through their objects. While this year’s exhibition was successful, we note there is room for improvement in student participation by introducing more interactive components and group work. It will also help to encourage more departmental interdisciplinary links. We will build on this next year.
